Brown signs historic vaccine bill

SACRAMENTO — In a historic decision that could reverberate nationwide, Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed a bill mandating that almost all California schoolchildren be fully vaccinated, regardless of their parents’ personal or religious beliefs.

By signing Senate Bill 277 into law, Brown pushed the Golden State — long a bastion of liberal vaccine exemptions — into an odd political alliance with two conservative states, Mississippi and West Virginia. Until Tuesday, they were the only states that permitted medical exemptions as the sole legitimate reasons to sidestep vaccinations.

“The science is clear that vaccines dramatically protect children against a number of infectious and dangerous diseases,” Brown wrote in his signing message. “While it’s true that no medical intervention is without risk, the evidence shows that immunization powerfully benefits and protects the community.”

But the governor also noted that the Legislature had specifically amended SB277 to exempt children from immunizations whenever their physicians conclude that there are “circumstances, including but not limited to, family medical history, for which the physician does not recommend immunization.”

    Good job Gov. Brown.
if people dont want to protect their children from these diseases then keep them at home.that is a choice!

There will be some ‘physician shopping’; and more lawsuits, obstructions, etc….but, eventually, it will all resolve.

This is not about 100 cases of measles at Disneyland and protecting the herd. This is a gross over-reach of government and the ruling of the people by BIG PHARMA through BIG GOVERNMENT. Do your research here folks.
Let the lawsuits begin. There was a referendum proposed yesterday to allow the PEOPLE to decide what is good for the PEOPLE regarding this flagrant abuse of power.
If we are to allow this to happen, what will it be next?

CW. “Over reach?” Really? A lady died in Washington today from Measles. The first Measles death in America since 2003. I for one do NOT want to see Polio make a comeback like Measles has simply because some blonde bimbo “thinks” the vaccine might be bad.

Rock is a kid with no kids so his point of view is a little different than us pesky parents.

  7. Moral Hazard says - Posted: July 2, 2015

That referendum doesn’t have any support and us pesky parents tend to vote. Good luck with a referendum. You have to remember that college educated people tend to vote in higher numbers. That does not bode well for a law based solely on ignorance.

Pesky parent here. Business owner…..I get that maybe politically you don’t think it’s right for the government to make decisions for us. I get that, and that is fine. I tend to kinda agree with the view point that the government shouldn’t legislate how we treat our body. BUT the USA isn’t a democracy. It’s a republic.

In the case of vaccines and the moronic belief that Jenny McCarthy started tour governments job is to protect us from our own stupidity. Cause you know, it would suck to die.

Pesky mom here: vaccination is a public health issue. Would you like to return to the days of polio? My grandmother’s sister died from polio. Measles? I went to school with boy who was deaf from the measles his mom got when she was pregnant with him. If not enough people are vaccinated then those that cannot get vaccinated (tiny babies, kids with immune diseases) or people who were vaccinated but whose immune system is weak (cancer patients, people with HIV) could get sick and die. These people don’t have a choice. You do — if you don’t want to vaccinate your kids feel free to home school them. Frankly, if I ran a crowded place like Disneyland I’d make you show proof of vaccination before I let you in.

So much for parent or guardian permission for field trips. In Washington they are implanting IUD in girls as young as 6th grade without parents knowing. I vaccinate my kids, even opted for the chicken pox vaccine after my wife and i researched it. But now we are mandated to put gardasil and flu vaccine into our kids? Follow the money…some doctors and vaccine companies along with politicians are popping champagne right now. But hey if it keeps us safer…lets ban angora, driving, guns, fast food, foul language, drugs, war, and death…cause that way we can all be safer.

    According to bo:
“In Washington they are implanting IUD in girls as young as 6th grade without parents knowing.”

How ’bout a little documentation or background?

  12. rock4tahoe says - Posted: July 3, 2015

BO. That is a ridiculous comment, “some doctors and vaccine companies along with politicians are popping champagne right now… ban angora, driving, guns, fast food, foul language, drugs, war, and death…cause that way we can all be safer.”

How much does the Polio Vaccine cost versus treating a case of Polio? Same goes for Whooping Cough or Measles.

Yes, all my kids were vaccinated too. This is the 21st Century not the 13th.

So its about cost rock? But everybody has affordable health care now. Whats so ridiculous? Where does it stop to keep us safe? How does my kid not being vaccinated endanger your vaccinated kid? Why did you not address gardasil in your response? Where do you get off dictating to others how to live their life and raise their kids?

That link reeks of BS. How do people fall for this stuff? Nothing in that article strikes you as misleading?

  15. rock4tahoe says - Posted: July 4, 2015

BO. You want to bring contraception into this thread now? Via a pro life link? BTY. There are so many problems with that link anyway. If the hypothetical 6th grade girl is having sex and the parents do not know, the lack of communication is the greater problem in my mind. Also, what if the girl is forced to have sex with Dad, Step Dad or Grandpa and wants protection from a pregnancy? You are going to deny her?

    Anyway.

Your un-vaccinated kid becomes “Typhoid Mary” to others that are un-vaccinated, small children or Humans with weak immune systems.

Letting children “get” an illness like Polio and the rest is a Child Protective Services issue to me.

Again, we left the 19th century behind.

  16. business owner says - Posted: July 6, 2015

    Rock

You are saying you are pro choice and the govt has no right telling a women what she can do with an unborn child but at the same time can force parents to put substances in their kids bodies they dont agree with? Liberal logic.

By the way…good job side stepping gardasil, again. Give it time, govt and corps will come up with more vaccines that arent truly necassary and could possibly have even worse side effects than now, all for profit.

“Your un-vaccinated kid becomes “Typhoid Mary” to others that are un-vaccinated, small children or Humans with weak immune systems.”
Ridiculous statement since everybody in your perfect world is vaccinated.

“Letting children “get” an illness like Polio and the rest is a Child Protective Services issue to me.”
Scary statement and represents the fear parents have of this dangerous precedent being set. Govt knows better than parents is a terrifying line to walk. Who makes those decisions? Oh yeah, our very uncorrupt govt right?

  17. nature bats last says - Posted: July 6, 2015

BO. you excell in fear based frenzy hysteria. I would love to have you leave this country and go live somewhere where there are no rules or restrictions. If you dont want no one telling you what to do and how to stay safe there are places on this planet that will accomodate you. Bon voyage.

” If you dont want no one telling you what to do”……….nature you really should have tried for a GED.

  19. business owner says - Posted: July 6, 2015

Out of all the people on here nature, u are the most worthless, antagonistic, little weeny. I am very suprised u havent had sense beaten into u yet. I am positive u keep your head down daily or mouth off and run…daily. stop adding worthless statements to conversations like “finger pointer”. Rock can hold his own and i am curious about his response.

And liberals like you are so far away from the founders and the ideals that made this country great its astounding. Maybe u r the one that should leave…or we could meet up for lunch some day….ninny boy!
