CalPERS retirees flee California

This city’s Spanish name recalls grassy, spring-fed meadows that nourished the first farms here and gave laborers relief from desert heat.
Now Las Vegas draws a new generation of settlers epitomized by California transplant Joe Beck: CalPERS pensioners who have made Sin City their No. 1 destination for retirement outside California.
“Compared to California, Las Vegas was a no-brainer,” said Beck, a former Southern California school district maintenance administrator who moved here in 2000. “I decided that if I could handle the heat three months out of the year, I needed to move to where my retirement check would be tax-free.”
About 15 percent of the 561,000 pensioners in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System live their golden years outside the Golden State, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis of fund data by the Sacramento Bee. The vast majority have flocked to low-tax or no-tax states, creating a veritable river of cash that flows out of California and into cities such as Las Vegas; Reno; Tucson, Ariz.; and Grants Pass, Ore.
The very people who created the hell-hole that California has become, are now working to turn Nevada into the same. People who make their living off other people’s taxes looking to avoid paying taxes themselves. Nice. Typical.
This is absolutely no surprise. Between the horrendous tax/fee burden imposed by CA on those who have an income to support the massive liberal welfare state for those who don’t (for whatever reason)it’s no wonder that many of us have fled CA. If you work in CA but live out of state, i.e. NV, you still pay CA income tax. It’s only when you retire they can’t tax your pension. The fact that many years ago the Federal government told states like CA that they couldn’t tax out of state residents even if they derived retirement income from CA made it even more attractive to leave. Prior to that, CA continued to tax retirees even if they lived out of state. In fact, I have a number of conservative minded friends who are fed up with CA politics & taxes & have or are planning to move to NV.
Two heart felt words to those who would uproot their lives and start anew simply to avoid paying their fair share of taxes to live in the most wonderful state in the country.

From what’s been said about the failure of Nevada’s tax system lately, it sounds like it won’t be an income tax-free state for very long.
There are only a handful of states that don’t tax retirees and the ones that are close will fill with people who left. Cal-Pers people and anyone have no obligation to stay and pay for uncontrolled massive welfare increases paid by tax increases or what is happening from open borders and selective ignored immigration laws. People with retirements are leaving in mass and are only a small percentage of the number that is exiting and growing yearly as this state becomes closer to the critical mass of less tax-payers to massive growing numbers of free government services takers. Government is predicted to be the largest employer in the state in the future as private employers continue to leave and at the same time the poverty and dependency will grow. This is the future in this state unless reversed. The state will have to be supported by an ever growing tax burden and dependency on the federal government which will dictate the way these funds are used for things like Common Core and HUD mandated Agenda 21 housing projects as this state self destructs like what is seen in many large leftist run cities or states where the tax payers left.
Haddi: We pay MORE than our fair share. What about the lazy non working government handout fools? They pay NOTHING!! If you think there is anything good about this state other than geography, you belong here. Nature Bat in the belfry is a prime example of someone who belongs in Cali-Lib-Mexico with all the other liberal sheep, led by an old goat.

Justice, I’m not quite sure how math equations work in your world, but in mine 15% doesn’t quite equate to a level of “leaving in mass”.
15% of millions of CALPERS retirees, add that to the numbers of private citizens with or without a pension leaving, which I have heard are around 10k per month, add that to all the big companies that relocated. The numbers are there, they are real, and the people left will pay for those who don’t. Just like when Detroit collapsed or any other large leftist city that is imploding and being boarded up as people leave.

I’m glad the people who have left are happy in their new homes. I personally feel blessed to be able to live in Northern California and South Lake Tahoe specifically.

Bigger 15% is still 84k people that is a lot. Though there are many reasons why retirees move out of state. One of them could be lower taxes, or lower housing cost now that they have sold their high price larger home and can live in a smaller one, or it could be that their children have moved out of state and they want to be near them and their grandkids. But personally if I retired and I wanted to retire to Tahoe and it cost me 5k more a year to live in SLT vs Stateline, I would chose Stateline. After all I would be on a fixed income. Those narrow-minded people that are saying good riddance really don’t know these retirees situation and are being unfair.
Kits: glad to see you remain ignorant of facts. California ranks about 14 with population with at least a BA and 15 with folks with an advanced college degree; Nevada btw ranks 45 and 41, respectively.
California has generated more money for the federal gov than it has received 6 out of the last 7 years, while Nevada has been a moocher 4 of the last 7 and Nevada was only barely in the black in 2014.
California’s economy is the greatest in the US by far (Nevada is way back there at 33, 1/17 that of California) and California has the 8th largest economy in the world.
Unemployment rate in California 6.5 compared to Nevada of 7.1.

Reloman, 84,000 is a far cry from the supposed millions Justice rants about. What’s even funnier is he suggests that there are millions of Calpers retirees when in the article it states that there are 561,000 Calpers retirees currently.
There are millions in CalPers who will or did retire and they will take their money with them, same for the Calstrs system, same for the federal system and every retirement system that has people not wanting to be over-taxed in a crazy train state being run by a senile laughed out of office nimwit. Is it really that hard to understand that every liberal utopia eventually runs out of money and producers that are replaced by the takers? Go to Greece and look around for a clue if you want to see it for yourself.

That is such a sling of bs, 15 percent give us data on all retirees that retire from any employment in any state. Most people retire to a new state a favorite vacation spot , Hawaii. This story is pure bashing! Give us a real report of how many retirees in the US move when they retire, closer to family, back home whatever. how many New Yorkers retire to Florida!!
