A back country skier survived being swept up by a 1,000-foot-long avalanche on Mount Tallac on Saturday.

The skier was carried about 800 feet. The extent of injuries is not known. According to the Sierra Avalanche Center, the person lost equipment and some was broken.

The incident occurred at 12:30pm March 25 in The Cross; elevation 9,500 feet.

Eight people had skied that area 90 minutes earlier. At that time “minor loose wet activity was observed.”

The avalanche occurred when one of two skiers descended from the skier’s left. After several turns the slope gave way.

The avalanche danger for March 27 is considerable.
