Exxon Mobil investigated for possible climate change lies

By Justin Gillis and Clifford Krauss, New York Times

The New York attorney general has begun an investigation of Exxon Mobil to determine whether the company lied to the public about the risks of climate change or to investors about how such risks might hurt the oil business.

According to people with knowledge of the investigation, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued a subpoena Wednesday evening to Exxon Mobil, demanding extensive financial records, emails and other documents.

The investigation focuses on whether statements the company made to investors about climate risks as recently as this year were consistent with the company’s own long-running scientific research.

The people said the inquiry would include a period of at least a decade during which Exxon Mobil funded outside groups that sought to undermine climate science, even as its in-house scientists were outlining the potential consequences — and uncertainties — to company executives.

How can you be charged with “lying” about a theory??
This government is evil. If you don’t tow their line, they will send in the hounds.
Guess everybody’s looking forward to having expensive power and gas back. . .

Lies? I can think of a few whoopers from BHO, but he’s sitting pretty. Sure wish I could have kept my former doctors, Mr. President. Sure wish I still had the medications that my former insurance covered, Mr. President. Sure wish…

If you have complaints about your health care (and most other things people complain about) — blame CONGRESS! The President doesn’t write or vote on legislation. But I agree it’s a mess because, unlike any other country, Congress is allowing our healthcare system to be run by insurance companies.

Move along, nothing to see here. Just another corrupt government investigation against a capitalist private entity to help bolster their false, and failing, narrative regarding so called manmade climate change. SOP for our socialist tyrants.

Oh those poor beleaguered corporations. I think the journalists who uncovered Exxon’s tactics of covering up their own conclusions about their own scientific data and their intentional campaign of disinformation in the public sector, scientific community and political influence(just for a frickin’ 100 years of profit) are the one’s who should be arrested, charged, tried and hanged. Can’t have citizens mucking around in history, ruining business for the 1%. Not to mention(okay, I’ll mention it) the callous and cynical disregard for the other life on this beautiful planet we all inhabit.

Dog-your hatred for this government AND people are atrocious. Maybe you could enjoy the rest of your life in freedom elsewhere, where you don’t have to be the victim of such tyranny.

Gus…WHO ranks the US number 37 in the world, snuggled in between such industrial powerhouses as Costa Rica and Slovenia.

‘In 2006, the United States was number 1 in terms of health care spending per capita but ranked 39th for infant mortality, 43rd for adult female mortality, 42nd for adult male mortality, and 36th for life expectancy. These facts have fueled a question now being discussed in academic circles, as well as by government and the public: Why do we spend so much to get so little?’

Why is healthcare a right in most of the civilized world, and a privilege in this country?

Hmmm, your assessment of dogzilla is spot on. She needs a good dose of rest of the world reality. All she is able to accomplish here is finger pointing and spewing hatred towards the government and people not like her.pathetic hateful human.

I’m curious if those of you calling this a witch hunt would have made those same statements about when the tobacco industry was busted years ago for hiding what they knew about the effects of tobacco on a human’s physiology.

And I would think that for an industry that receives soooooo much in government subsidies you “I hate government” folks would totally be on board with this. But then that would be WAY to logical for you folks, wouldn’t it?

  8. Gus says - Posted: November 6, 2015

Animal and Hmmm…They call it Obamacare for good reason. I don’t really care how WHO or anyone else ranks the USA. All I know is that I’m without proper medical care and medication since Obamacare was implemented and I AM SUFFERING. I’ve never thought of myself as a victim but I’m definitely worse off since all of the health care changes were forced on me. And yes, Congress had a role too – a big one! Our government, including both parties in power, is dysfunctional and rarely represents the best interests of the people who put them in power. Want to win back my trust? – give all Americans access to the phat health insurance and retirement enjoyed by our elected representatives in Washington. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. And Hmmm…did I read you correctly? Do you really want to execute people who have disregard for other life on the planet? Really – a death sentence, the ultimate penalty? I’d really like to see you explain that to the children whose parents you want murdered – or are you all bluff and blunder? I consider you a terrorist and a danger to civil society. Talk about atrocious. you Sir or Madame, are the worst kind of atrocious.

Gus, some random thoughts regarding your posts.

I agree that what Congress votes themselves should be applied to ALL citizens. Including raises, family time, perks.

Regarding your Romneycare/Obamacare-I too am critical of it(probably for different reasons than you)…..call it what you wish, but please try to be accurate and truthful. Anything that allows the fox to guard the hen house, much less build it, is subject to abuse.

Call me a terrorist if you wish, though I don’t really fit the definition, which is rather loose and subjective: Merriam Webster online dictionary: terrorism-the use of violent acts to frighten the people in an area as a way of trying to achieve a political goal.
    WordNet Dictionary
Noun 1.terrorist – a radical who employs terror as a political weapon; usually organizes with other terrorists in small cells; often uses religion as a cover for terrorist activities
Adj. 1.terrorist – characteristic of someone who employs terrorism (especially as a political weapon); “terrorist activity”; “terrorist state”.

Regarding my support for the death penalty…I am for it for certain violent crimes, as well as a large array of white collar crimes that occur due to intentional choices that result in suffering and death for people, and/or violates a sacred trust(pedophile priests). It is not an effective deterrent, but it is a valid and appropriate consequence, in my opinion. “Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a person” -Plato.

How would I explain it to their kids? “….their INTENTIONAL actions-(for profit, no less!) killed and maimed innocent people. Same yardstick should apply to CEO’s and politicians.

Ya dog, we know you dont believe in community. So go live somewhere where that works for you cuz it sure isnt america. Wouldnt want you to have to contribute to the betterment for all, you know, clean drinkable water, roads, toilets, clean air, internet access so you can whine when you want. There are no free lunches. Even for you…

  16. rock4tahoe says - Posted: November 6, 2015

Dog. Now we have talked about this before. The Tobacco Industry played the “theory” of smoking doesn’t cause cancer for decades while Millions of Americans died. Some Doctors knew smoking was linked to cancer in the early 1900’s and most Doctors knew by the 1950’s.

So, were the Tobacco companies “evil” or our Government?

And how expensive has tobacco been to our Country?

  17. rock4tahoe says - Posted: November 6, 2015

Well, the Reich Wing Meth heads have exploded on this thread. Yobo, Gus put your pipes down for a while, the Exxon Valdez floating above your heads is just a dragon of your minds.

  19. Rick says - Posted: November 6, 2015

Dog, your ignorance of science is emblematic of why Americans score so poorly on science compared with the rest of the advanced world. Hypothesis, theory and facts are not rungs on a hierarchical ladder. A theory is a well accepted hypothesis that best explains a set of facts. Climate change is both a fact and a theory. Tens of thousands of studies have provided evidence of climate change and the causal link of changes in atmospheric chemistry brought on by human behavior. The theory portion is the mechanism that provides how the causal link operates (same discussion relevant for evolution, a fact and theory that most major religions do not disagree – only evangelical Christians and orthodox Muslims and Jews (e.g, 95% of Jews accept the scientific theory of evolution).

If you had bothered to pay attention, the gov is investigating whether or not privately Exxon made statements that did not match their public statements. This is a violation of investment law as it misleads investors. These are actually the same processes the gov successfully used to nail the cigarette companies who lied for years publicly (killing a lot of folks in the process) but privately admitted they had problems. So if Exxon’s private comments match their public ones, then investors have not been mislead, if however, they differ significantly, then yeah they have a very serious problem.

Oh and by the way, the price of oil will not be going up anytime soon as the Saudi’s are purposefully flooding the market because their production cost are low so they can cause grief with other oil producers that need oil at $80 or more a barrel before they can make a profit. Pretty much all oil experts do not expect oil prices to rise for several years – no I am not worried about higher price as the Saudi’s (like debeers with diamonds) control the price, not Exxon.

Dogula…I think you misread the Preamble to the United States Constitution; It begins “We the People ..” not “Me the Person…”. I guess it’s understandable given how myopic your views are.

  21. Dogula says - Posted: November 6, 2015

So, what exactly is YOUR definition of a “human right”?

  22. Dogula says - Posted: November 7, 2015

Oh, yeah, it all sounds very sweet and feely.
But it still requires the use of force against one group of people to provide a service to another. How is that not a form of slavery?
If it involves force, it is NOT a right.

  23. Hmmm... says - Posted: November 7, 2015

  29. Rick says - Posted: November 7, 2015

Dog, You have absolutely no logic – force? What force, people have a right to proper health care. We Americans have some of the worst health care in the industrialized world. Our cost are finally coming down, in part to the ACA, but we still pay more health care cost then all other advanced societies, by a lot. As we improve the number of folks covered, our cost are declining, and we are seeing improvements in preventative care, which in turn improves long-term care.

    Rick

  30. Dogula says - Posted: November 7, 2015

No logic??? What world do you live in Rick?? In your world, it’s acceptable to force doctors to work for whatever wage the government says they must accept, regardless of their efforts and their abilities? How do you have the right to someone else’s labor? I don’t know what business you are in right now, but imagine that the government can tell you that you MUST provide a service for anybody who demands it, and you MUST accept what they are willing to pay?
What kind of bullhockey is that? It is pure straight up tyranny.
The ONLY reason we pay so much for medical care in this country is because for the last 40 years government has been mandating what insurance must cover and how doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies must conduct their businesses. Regardless of costs.
There is a total disconnect between the consumer and the provider because of this government mandated insurance set-up. If you actually paid your doctor and your hospital, it would never have gotten to this outrageously expensive situation. But people stopped paying attention to what stuff cost because it wasn’t THEM paying the bills. It was the insurance company, their employer, Medi-Cal, Medi-Care, always somebody else, so who cares what it costs, just gimme gimme gimme what I want. It has a name, even: Moral hazard.
YOU created this problem, not the doctors. Now you want THEM to pay, and provide you with ever increasing care for free.
What world do you live in?

  31. Dogula says - Posted: November 7, 2015

Costs are not coming down. Even the government is admitting that. There are NO cost controls in the ACA. And the few people who are paying less for their insurance (and they ARE a minority) are only paying less because they are being subsidized. By their neighbors. Through taxes. Theft.
Are you really okay forcing your neighbor to pay for your medical insurance? Do you really believe that is okay?

  32. billy the mountain says - Posted: November 7, 2015

Ironically, the most efficient health care systems in the world are government run.

  33. reloman says - Posted: November 7, 2015

because those goverments truely care about bring the cost down. Ours do not Every year the medicare has to be revoted on they have to exclude doctors from getting their fees cut(in goverment speak a cut is when what you are paying is less than what they were projecting it to be. I.E. an item cost 50 to day and the have it budgeted to be 80 in 10 years and they want to cut it so it cost 75 in 10 years)
We are paying our medical professionals 50% more than other developed nations. We should slash what we are paying everyone by 30%. Including drug co, med devices, doctors, nurses hospitals, everyone.
This would never happen as ALL politicians want to stay in office and the med profession would get them booted.

  34. Hmmm... says - Posted: November 8, 2015

‘Straight up tyranny’? Jeezus you are shallow.

  35. rock4tahoe says - Posted: November 10, 2015

Dog. Just when you start to make a real argument, you go off the deep end with this tyranny crap. Are you on Meth?!

Ok. First of all, CPI from 1970 to 2005 was about 500% (a loaf of bread in 1970 that cost 20 cents was now $1). However, the Medical CPI over the same period was almost 1900% (a trip to the ER that cost $100 in 1970 now costs $1900). Since ACA was passed in 2010, US Health Care Inflation has averaged 2.9% or a drop of 2.5% over the 35 year average.

17 Million Americans have signed up for Health Insurance thanks to ACA.

The percentage of Americans without Health Insurance has dropped 45% thanks to ACA.

Insurance companies cannot ask question about pre-existing conditions thanks to ACA.

Parents can keep their kids on Health Insurance Plans until they are 26 years old thanks to ACA.

A family should NOT be put in the street just because of a diagnosis of Cancer, Heart Disease or some other health issue.

ACA has NOT destroyed the American Economy.

We subsidize Oil, Coal, Gas, Timber, Mining, Tobacco, War and a host of other items year after year in America. Why can’t we help Americans get Health Insurance?

I would say that the reign of Tyrannical Insurance companies is over thanks to ACA.

  36. Dogula says - Posted: November 10, 2015

You justify governmental takeover of the medical care industry by pointing to the fact that we subsidize industries you constantly demonize?
    Makes perfect sense to me.
If we subsidize one we should subsidize all?
How ’bout we subsidize NONE of it??

  37. rock4tahoe says - Posted: December 5, 2015

Dog. It is called “priorities.” Civilized Nations prioritize their values. I prefer health of the individual instead of the health of the legally created individual aka Corporation.

Did Tobacco subsidies cause your hated “Gubment” takeover of the Cigarette industry… NO.

FYI. Tobacco subsidies lasted 77 years while the health costs to America and Americans over that period cannot even be calculated.
