Letter: NDOW bear actions questioned

image_pdfimage_print

To the community,

Many of you are probably aware of the female mother bear captured at Incline High School last Wednesday morning without her cub. The story has been covered by the media. There have been daily reports since Wednesday through Saturday.

Unfortunately, many of the details within the reports are misleading and not truthful on the part of NDOW.

The mother bear was on the football field of Incline High School on Wednesday morning and the school went into lockdown. A volunteer for the Nevada Department of Wildlife, who is also an Incline Village resident, was called to the school to act on NDOW’s behalf. The NDOW volunteer treed the female bear on campus and kept her there for two hours until NDOW personnel arrived. Despite her being a lactating female, she was tranquilized and removed from IHS and taken to Carson City. NDOW said this mother bear was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and was not a “threat”.

She was brought back to IHS in the late afternoon in the hopes of reuniting her with her cub. The BEAR League and other bear advocates were aware of the plan and steered clear so the mom and cub could be reunited. NDOW brought a family trap with the mom to IHS Wednesday late afternoon behind a locked gate. NDOW, however, reported that “someone found their way in there and disrupted the area and kept the reunion from happening.”

Chris Healy of NDOW further stated, “Unfortunately, NDOW bear trapping efforts in Incline Village have been greatly hindered by people tampering with traps. The strategy has a chance of working only if the trap is not tampered with. Over the past few years, a small group of people have seen fit to prevent NDoW from trapping bears at Incline Village by encouraging activists to monitor traps and prevent bears from entering those legally set traps”

As many of you know, from 2009-2013, NDOW killed 48 percent of trapped Incline Village bears. Because of this, some Incline Village BEAR League volunteers and bear activists have peacefully protested and monitored trap activity in Incline Village the last few years. It is clear to those in the community and beyond that NDoW’s comments about the disruption Wednesday night are clearly targeting and accusing the BEAR League volunteers as interfering and disrupting the mother-cub reunion. NDoW’s comments are not only dishonest but NDOW knows they are highly misleading:
Since the story broke out on Mynews4 on Wednesday, the BEAR League, BEAR League Incline Village volunteers, and other bear advocates all chose to “stand down” and not discuss or post anything publicly relating to the trapped mother bear. Bear advocates only concern was reuniting the mother with the cub. Everyone agreed to stay clear of IHS so NDOW could reunite the mother and cub in the family trap. Unfortunately, this did not happen Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

On Thursday morning the BEAR League received a call about a cub sighting near IHS. Two BEAR League volunteers immediately went to the area and also immediately called NDoW to report the sighting.

BEAR League volunteers canvassed the neighborhood. Four different households reported seeing a cub. Three sightings on one street still appear legitimate while a fourth sighting on a different street turned out to be a yearling.

At this time, NDOW also said they would prefer to place the trap very near to the last sighting of the bear cub.

BEAR League volunteers approached, asked and secured full approval from a property owner to place the trap on their property. The BEAR League then called NDoW explaining they secured a placement of the trap and the location was not readily visible for others to see.

The trap stayed in place from Thursday night through Saturday morning. Unfortunately, the cub did not enter the family trap. The lactating mother bear was released out of the area Saturday afternoon with a GPS tracking collar in case the cub is located.

NDOW should have never trapped and removed a mother bear without getting the cub. She could have been easily escorted off the school property. Mother bears typically place their cubs in trees for their safety and leave only to come back a short time later. Again, this lactating mother should have been allowed to leave school grounds to get back to her cub. Instead, she was treed for two hours, tranquilized, and taken to Carson City.

Furthermore BEAR League volunteers assisted NDoW both in reporting sightings and arranging permission on private property for the trap to be set so the cub can be reunited with his mom. NDoW, however, has implied and continues (with Saturday reporting) to infer that BEAR League volunteers hindered their efforts. NDoW’s Chris Healy through carefully crafted Press Releases, emails and interviews continue to slander and tell untruths about bear advocates in Incline Village and continue to blame others for their actions that lead to an abandoned cub.

It’s unfortunate that this Incline incident is not the first time NDoW abandoned a cub. On June 2nd of this year, NDOW quietly trapped a lactating female in Carson City. They did not catch the cub and NDOW relocated this lactating mother bear in the Pinegrove Mountains two and one half hours away. NDOW is not always transparent as this information was obtained through a public records request. Because this most recent abandoned cub happened in Incline Village where bear advocates monitor NDOW’s activities, NDOW could not sweep this under. Instead, they are attacking the very organization and people who truly wanted to reunite the mom and cub as NDOW handled this situation wrong from the beginning.

If anyone sees this lone cub with two tags in both ears, please call the BEAR League at 530.525.7297.

Thank you,

Carolyn Stark, BEAR League volunteer

Thank you Carolyn for telling “the rest of the story” as Paul Harvey used to say on his radio broadcast.

Just this afternoon a sow and three cubs wandered on to South Tahoe High School property. These four bears were simply averted with an electric megaphone’s siren and they left the property straight away. No state agencies needed to be called. No lockdown, treeing, tranquilizing, or trapping needed. Just some very simple aversion techniques were required and used with complete success. And nothing, human or bear, was ever put in danger.

Thank you Carolyn for telling the real story. Chris Healy should apologize to all the Bear League volunteers who assisted Heather from NDOW look for the cub for hours and also securing a spot for the family trap to be placed.

I only wish NDOW would have contacted the Bear League in the beginning when the school called them to report a bear siting. The Bear League trained representatives would have walked the bear and cub safely off the property. Instead the mother was tranquilized and moved to Reno in a trap without her cub.

The Bear League is often called by the Hyatt to assist in walking bears off the property to a wooded area. Many other local businesses and residents are very appreciative of what the Bear League does in ways of education and delivering loaner electric mats and free industrial strength ammonia. I for one, met the bear league after calling their hot line when I had signs of a bear in my yard. They were professional, helpful and caring and never once made me feel threatened or uneasy.

I hope this cub is found and reunited with her mother. If not, I hope next time, the situation in handled differently.

Great Job Bear League for responding to bear calls 24/7 helping our community. If you have never contacted the Bear League for help, please try it before judging.

Toogee that Mama and her cubs have been all over Gardner Mountain neighborhoods all summer, with no major issues. Way too much bear hysteria.

Hmmm I have some wonderful pics I got out at the Fallen Leaf Lake dam into Taylor Creek of that family about 6 weeks ago. Have heard multiple reports on them from folks living in the Gardner Mountain neighborhood, just like you said, as well. The sow is a rich chocolate color with two cubs colored identical to her and one cub is jet black.

In my above comment and in my letter posted yesterday I failed to include my email address just in case anyone who agrees or disagrees with me would care to have a civil discussion about these situations. I would be more than happy to try and set up a time to meet in person with anyone interested. My email address is: toognian@gmail.com

And The Bear League number once again is: 530-525-7297

When Bear league and Ndow work together, there will always be problems ,Dont you get it yet ?

  6. Toogee says - Posted: September 21, 2015

Lisa I disagree 100%. Do we see eye to eye all the time? Absolutely not. But I will give NDOW credit for understanding that The Bear League really does have the qualifications to make a contribution to a given effort. Even if they won’t admit it. Just earlier this summer on July 18th a cooperative effort to capture and intorduce into rehab a cub who’s mother was nowhere to be found for weeks. The Bear League and NDOW had the best outcome achievable: rescue the cub, get it into a rehab center and give it another chance at survival.

We in The Bear League see these cooperative efforts that are achieved with NDOW when placing the needs of the bears AND humans in the big picture as our goal.

Our mantra of coexistence is truly being offered to NDOW on a regular basis. We advocate the use of education before the use of force. More often than not that seems to be the only sticking point between The Bear League and NDOW.

“Since the story broke out on Mynews4 on Wednesday, the BEAR League, BEAR League Incline Village volunteers, and other bear advocates all chose to “stand down” and not discuss or post anything publicly relating to the trapped mother bear.”

This is an outright lie. The bear league fb page made several “public” posts about the trapped mother. Your story loses all credibility when you are dishonest.

  8. Pro Bear and Truth says - Posted: September 21, 2015

    honesty,
Why don’t you show or link to these posts you say are there?
    Where are they?
There aren’t any on the Bear League page.
I see they posted wanting to find the cub.
You should change your name to Dishonesty.

  9. In the name of honesty says - Posted: September 21, 2015

4th post down from the top on their page clearly references the situation that the original letter writer falsely claimed that bear advocates would not post anything about. The following quote is taken directly from the comments made by the bear league on the page. Again, no credibility in the above letter or with that organization as a whole.

“Supposedly NDOW is now going to bring the Mother Bear. Let’s hope they release her in the area where the cub was last seen so she can call to him and they can find each other with No More human interference. She should never have been trapped and taken from him in the first place. Come on NDOW, now is your chance to finally do the right thing after you unnecessarily created a huge, cruel and very sad situation. We shouldn’t….but we are hoping..”

  10. Carolyn says - Posted: September 21, 2015

    Dishonesty,

The BEAR League stood down entirely on Wednesday and did not post anything on social media or mention anything about NDoW’s plans to bring a trap to IHS on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, NDoW’s plan did not work.
On Thursday, people called in to the BEAR League about a sighting of the cub. The BEAR League went into action and went door to door and search for the cub with NDoW.
Furthermore, we secured the trap location for the next two nights and kept that quiet as well.
I wonder what your negative agenda is? YOU aren’t credible; moreover, you won’t even identify yourself.

  11. West Side says - Posted: September 22, 2015

Yep, In the name of honesty. If you keep reading even Carolyn made a comment about the mom being brought back in a family trap on Thursday.

Here it is ” Not yet Sandy. The cub was spotted in the area today. NDoW brought the mom back in a family trap to try to lure the cub. Let’s hope it works.” September 17 at 8:32pm

The post about the vacationer packing up their car on the same day and a bear tried to get an apple is a FAKE story also.

The sow with three cubs has been in our neighborhood near Tahoe Valley Elementary School. They are very casual as they stroll around looking for food. This last friday, trash day, they hit the jackpot and left a path of strewn trash for three blocks. The garbage guys dont make it to our area till late morning and by then it was a mess. Usually there isnt a problem with garbage raids in our neighborhood but it was a huge mess. Im sure clean tahoe was called out to help. I hope these bears make it to hibernation. They seem like a lucky family to have three cubs that have survived the gauntlet of stuff all summer.

Thanks, Carolyn, for letting us know the other side of the story. NDOW traps a lactating female bear, and can’t successfully trap the cub, even with the help of many concerned bear advocates, and proceeds to blame the problem on others when in fact one can see that NDOW caused the problem by trapping the mother bear in the first place. Why weren’t alternative methods (i.e. shooing the bear away) employed? NDOW loses credibility in the eyes of many in Incline when they don’t take responsibility for their actions.
