Popularity of golf on the decline

By Alanna Petroff, CNNMoney

Golf’s popularity is waning and the industry is getting whacked.

Adidas, which owns the popular TaylorMade brand, is the latest company to warn about the decline of the sport. Sales at its golf division dropped by nearly 20 percent in the second quarter, leading the sportswear company to slash earnings forecasts for the year.

Callaway Golf reported a 7 percent decline in sales for the second quarter and predicted market conditions would remain “challenging” throughout the year. Even Nike’s golf division is underperforming. Sales stagnated over the last year as nearly every other division reported growth.

    Because of the cost

  2. Dogula says - Posted: August 10, 2014

Agreed. So many recreational activities are getting horribly expensive. Golf. Skiing, if you aren’t a pass holder. Concerts! I mean, tickets start at $70 for most of them at our parking lot amphitheater. Most of them aren’t selling out anymore either.
Unless you’re being subsidized by government in some way, through food stamps, section 8, or medi-Cal, regular folks have to make the choice between groceries and entertainment.
We’re lucky to live here, where we can at least take a walk on a beach or mountain trail without it costing us an arm and a leg.

“Unless you’re being subsidized by government in some way, through food stamps, section 8, or medi-Cal, regular folks have to make the choice between groceries and entertainment.”

Dog, are you insinuating that many of the folks who ski, golf, go to concerts, and spend money on recreation are on government subsidies?

    GET REAL!

This has to be one (of many) of your most outlandish statements.

I never said that, Bigs. . . you’re making assumptions where no such idea was ever intended.

  5. cosa pescado says - Posted: August 10, 2014

They never said that you said that. They said you insinuated it.
    And you did.
Your initial logic is ridiculous. It states that there is a choice between entertainment and food for everyone, except those who receive government subsidy.

    Biggerpictures question is legitimate.

Well dog that statement sure came across that way, but I guess the onus is on all of us to understand what you mean, regardless of what you type.

BP you did not do anything wrong. You demonstrated solid reading comprehension, identifying their logical connections in their though, understanding them, and reusing them.
    Dawg:
Break the sentence down into independent statements and change the order to see what logical connections exist in the sentence. Put it back together, reversing the conditional phrase (do / do not). This is a common logical exercise used to teach reading comprehension.

‘regular folks have to make the choice between groceries and entertainment.’
‘Unless you’re being subsidized by government in some way,’

The logic dictates that: people who are being subsidized by the government |do not| have to make the choice between groceries and entertainment.
Using the same logical connections the following is also valid.
‘ many of the folks who ski, golf, go to concerts, and spend money on recreation are on government subsidies? ‘
    No.

    The logic is flawed.

Get a life, Fish. My comment was very simple. Entertainment has gotten expensive. Food, rent, necessities have also become expensive. Most of us in the community are not making commensurate incomes. Unless there are subsidies of some kind, we are squeezed a lot tighter than we were 8 years ago. We must prioritize a lot more carefully than we used to.
Why you choose to take offense at that, I don’t understand. Seems to me you’re looking for a fight where none exists.

Classic Dog. The article is about Golf and Dog brings up “food stamps, section 8, or medi-Cal” then tries to deny it. Cosa, there is no logic with Dog’s blog vomit.

I will say again… 9 hole chip and putt courses.

Dog, your point is not evidence based. Most people that get some form of subsidies have even less discretionary income after their subsidies than you do. Now will some folks on subsidies miss use their funds, yes; but so will those folks that are just getting along.

I and 3000 of by cycling buds just did the Death Ride a few weeks back. I can be pretty sure almost no one on the ride with our several thousand dollar steeds were receiving subsidies, unless it was from a trust fund. The same can be said with other expensive sports such as golf. Not many folks on subsidies take up golf.

Now, I make it to a few games at AT&T Park each year, and I know some “regular” folk that spring for the cheap seats, and maybe even some folks on subsidies.

Most everyone spends some money on entertainment, those of us doing well spend more, those getting along spend less, and guess what, those on subsidies spend even less.

    Rick

    ‘My comment was very simple’
And yet apparently you don’t understand your own simple comment. I outlined what you said very clearly. Basic middle school reading comprehension techniques. Clearly that is beyond you.
Smart people know when they are being dumb and take the time to listen and understand why. In most cases being dumb is a temporary condition.
And you have the guts to criticize grammar.
Hope you enjoy your new golf hobby that you will apparently take up once your social security starts to kick in.

Go to HBO and try to catch the current edition of Real Sports. There is a 20 minute segment on the decline of golf in America. I believe the statistic quoted is that a golf course closes in America every 48 hours. Young golfers who are needed to keep the game alive say they do not want such long and difficult courses. We could have a shorter course in the current Washoe Meadows footprint that may do the trick of attracting both younger golfers and older ones who want a less arduous course. This is a chance for Tahoe to be on top of important trends rather than struggling to make older ideas work. The State Parks Commission and top management should be forced to watch the Real Sports and other news pieces about golf.
