Cash starting to flow to EDC supervisor candidates

Money is starting to flow to candidates who are running for office in the June 3 primary.

Candidates had to file their first donation/expense form on March 24. The next one is due May 24. If they receive more than $1,000 they have to fill out a separate form within 24 hours.

All donations of $100 or more must be reported.

Lake Tahoe News took a look at what candidates for District 5 supervisor are collecting and spending.

Angela Swanson

She has raised $2,500, all from family. Swanson has put in $1,000 of her own money, and her husband has contributed $750.

Swanson has spent $1,600 on fundraising services, graphics and meeting space.

Teresa Piper

She has been given $1,450 in cash and $1,842.05 in in-kind services, like signs. The largest single donation was $350 from Larry Hennick of Pollock Pines.

Kevin Brown

He has received $9,185.59 in cash and has spent almost half of it.

Brown received $1,000 from Douglas Veerkamp, a major construction business owner and brother of El Dorado County Supervisor Brian Veerkamp.

His biggest expenses were the filing fee and for a campaign website.

Geri Grego

She has received $3,290 in cash. The largest cash contributor is Daniel Norem ($1,000). He is an executive vice president with Adams & Associates in Reno.

A donation listed as “other” came from A&A Service Inc. in Concord for $2,000.

She has spent $1,000 in radio advertising.

Sue Novasel

She has raised $2,800. The bulk of that – $1,000 – is from her husband’s business partner, Dick Schwarte, and another $1,000 from Laborers Local 185 PAC in Sacramento.

Novasel’s husband, Bob, has loaned the campaign $10,000.

Novasel has spent $2,000 on campaign consulting fees with the Frank Ford Company in Auburn.

Unless SLT residents want their District 5 Supervisor to hail from Pollock Pines we better start rallying around a SLT candidate. There are so many SLT located candidates running that our votes will be way too diluted to beat a candidate from off the hill. United we stand, divided we fall. Don’t let people down the hill think they’ve outsmarted the Mountain-folks again. While we argue amongst ourselves they WILL sneak in the back door.

I have little faith that anyone from off the hill will have any real interest in SLT’s needs.

Beware campaign contributions from developers and unions and similar special interests. There is no such thing as a free lunch, they need to be repaid.

So far nobody seems to like any of the SLT candidates. So how do we decide who would be the best person to represent both Tahoe AND Pollock Pines? I’ve heard that Pollock feels like a red headed step child as well. Can we find one out of the six who might seem decent enough to care about both sides and represent fairly?

mountain girl, Deciding who to vote for the empty seat for supervisor, district 5, is difficult. I’ve heard Kevin Brown will be at the Home and Garden Show at the Rec. Center Friday and Saturday. I’m looking forward to talking with him and getting a feel for who he is. I’m hoping other candidates are in attendance there as well as Earth Day at Bijou park on Saturday.
Off topic, but mountain girl, were you ever married to Ken Kesey who hung out with the Merry Pranksters? Just thought I’d ask. You share a name from a woman with an interesting past. Further, OLS

OLS, no I am not that person, although I am a bit of a “prankster”..lol. Have never heard of either name :). I’m just a girl who lives in and loves our mountains.
Deciding on who to vote for is a tough and very important decision. I would just hope that most people choose to vote for someone who is best suited for the position, and who will represent BOTH areas, not just because they’re from Tahoe or Pollock.
I saw on Mr. Browns Facebook that he will be at the home and garden show Friday, but has several other events to attend on Saturday. Someone mentioned that he will have someone to represent him at his booth on Saturday, just FYI. I have not heard if the other candidates will be there also.
Looking forward to the upcoming forums.

Brown from Pollock is, from what I read, the developers candidate and that should say it all and I am sure his campaign contributions will reflect that. I also seem to recall he opposes the citizen groups taking back their local growth issues by taking the power away from the developers proposing massive new housing subdivisions, citizens are using petitions on the west slope which is a county wide issue. It is important in the basin after the Meyers debacle showed how things can get out of control quickly when no-one is looking.

Well since ALL the candidates interviewed with developers for endorsements, I’m assuming they were all ok with the possibility of receiving it. I plan on speaking to each candidate in person to get a better understanding of them personally and where they stand.
Not everything you read is true.

I was curious as to how much Ken Curtzweiler(aka, Skibum) had collected for his run for the supervisor seat. I called him and he tells me he put in 50 bucks of his own money and another 99 dollars came from a long time local Doctor,(Hi Dave!).
This is not an endorsement for Ken, as I’ve not made up my mind yet who I’ll vote for. I’m just sayin’ this guy is NOT taking money from outside construction firms, consultants, advisers or developers. Follow the money my friends, follow the money!
Choose wisely, our future depends on it! OLS
