2013 among the worst years for human rights

By Daniel Rothman, Los Angeles Times

WASHINGTON — With a Syrian chemical weapons attack that killed more than 1,000 civilians, violent crackdowns against protesters in Turkey and Ukraine and a string of anti-gay laws from Russia to Uganda, human rights abuses last year ranked among the worst in years, the State Department concluded Thursday in its annual review of more than 200 countries and territories.

“The year 2013 may well be known for some of the most egregious atrocities in recent memory,” Uzra Zeya, acting assistant secretary of State for democracy, human rights and labor, said during a briefing Thursday.

In addition to highlighting violence in Syria, Secretary of State John Kerry, who also attended the briefing, pointed to democratic back-sliding in several nations that threw off dictatorships during the “Arab Spring,” including Egypt.

As Obama has actively reduced American influence in the world evil rises to the opportunity offed by the new void.

    As predicted.

  2. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 1, 2014

CJ. Who was it that predicted we would be “seen as liberators” in Iraq? “The Iraq War will only cost $60 billion tops.” Who wanted Bin Laden “dead or alive” yet let him go at Tora Bora? “Bomb-bomb Iran” anyone? But, first you have to accept that history did not start after January 2009 CJ.

Your “opinions” are the only thing predictable.

  3. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 1, 2014

    r4t,

We were seen as liberators, don’t you remember the purple thumbs? People stood in voting lines that were bombed and stepped over bodies to get the chance to stand proud with purple thumbs. You probably didn’t notice that you half aware libbot.

What Obama did to us. to America in post war Iraq should make every Democrat hide their head in shame. SHAME

Horrid disrespect for our loss of life and treasure Team Obama literally handed much of the country back to our enemy.

I bet few of you liberals in SL Tahoe even have a clue about any of that.

    PITIFUL DEMOCRATS

That is all I have for you on this or anything else, r4t, you have no standing, no cred as far as I am concerned you’re nothing. Talk to the hand.

    Good day.

  4. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 1, 2014

CJ! Wow, still with the rants ‘eh.

Regardless of your opinions, in a thousand years from now, the Iraq War will still be viewed as one of the WORST American Policy events of all time!

Purple thumbs me eye. Seventy Percent of American Casualties were after the “purple thumb elections in February of 2005. What about the 4,486 dead GI’s? The 32,223 wounded? The $1.9 Trillion (CBO estimate) cost? THAT’S NOT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LIBERATE A COUNTRY CJ!

The only one that is “clue less” is you! BTW. Play with your own hand.

  5. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 1, 2014

That is right, that is when the democrats lead the fight to lose the peace.

  6. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 1, 2014

CJ. Still trying to sell the Iraq War as a good thing ‘eh? Sorry, Cons Bush/Cheney got us into the Iraq War and Obama/Biden got us out. But just think, you still get to pay part of the $1.9 Trillion tab, does that make you feel better?

  7. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 1, 2014

5 Years of Team Obama, Reid, Pelosi and America and the world is much, much worse off.

    As predicted.

    LIBERALS LIE … FREEDOMS DIE.

History folks, it’s here. You’re public education system has failed you.

    From here it gets worse.

  8. BitterClinger says - Posted: March 1, 2014

What an utter embarrassment for the Obama Regime.

At a time when the Regime is planning steep cuts to the military, Putin is on the move. The world is watching, and they see weakness in the United States like they’ve never seen before, unless they were alive when Carter was in office.

Syria, China, Iran, North Korea, they’re all taking note of this. And they’ll be on the move next, knowing that nobody is there to stop them.

The Regime’s unilateral disarmament for Eastern Europe was just stupid. That was the first sign that Putin had to make his move.

And ironically, it was Sarah Palin in October of 2008 who predicted this. Gee, I guess she wasn’t so dumb after all, like the media tried desperately to make her out to be. She made Obama look like the village idiot he is.

  9. Gordon Ford says - Posted: March 1, 2014

Say what you want about Obama. But the republicans answer to eight years of George Bush was John McCain and Sarah Palin? They essentially were a vote for status quo, and status quo very nearly destroyed this once great nation. Recall Iraq, economic meltdown, and the prescription drug plan? Obama saved the republicans from continuing to destroy what was left after bush.

  10. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 1, 2014

…and now back to reality … Obama is President and has been for five years, before that he was part of the democratically controlled Senate.

    Get with the facts people.

    History, it’s back.

  11. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 1, 2014

CJ. That’s all you have? Bumper sticker slogans for a War that cost so much life and treasure? Really pathetic.

How many Americans have died in Iraq in the past 5 years? Answer 264/none in 2013 or 2014. How many Twin Towers have collapsed in the past 5 years? ZERO! How many Al Qaeda leaders killed in the past 5 years? 41. People know the facts and they VOTED President Obama into office TWICE!

Hey Bitter! Here’s some history. Truck bombing in Beirut killing 241 American GI’s under Reagan. No one held accountable and we bugged out with Reagan’s tail between his legs. And you want to talk about Vlad’s buddy Sarin Assad in Syria? Really? Vlad can’t even control Chechnya and he “thinks” he can control Ukraine? Have you ever meant any Ukrainians? They are a tough bunch; good luck Vlad.

North Korea; big whoop. You can’t even see it at night from a thousand miles up.

China is killing its own people in a polluted cesspool of smog and filth. They have to keep moving factories and people into new cities because the old cities are so bad no one wants to stay.

    Sarah Palin? LMAO!

  12. cosa pescado says - Posted: March 1, 2014

Back to Reality CJ? You mean the Stock Markets record high? 401k’s going up? Housing rebound? American Auto Makers record sales? Unemployment down? Affordable health care for Americans? American energy independence? American consumer confidence up 30% since 2009? World Trade Center rebuilt? Bin Laden dead? Gaddafi dead? Dictator Mubarak gone? Dictator Bin Ali gone? All done without new Wars started?

  14. Old Long Skiis says - Posted: March 1, 2014

rock4tahoe, You and I might have more in common than I originally thought! You left out the fact that the bail outs for auto and financial instituions are being paid back to the lender (us!) in record time. Also the debacle that was 8 long years of bush rule, who took a nice surplus coming into office and turned it into the biggest debt in American history. Now? We’re coming back!!!!
Way to go bush. You started two illegal wars based on lies, destroyed two countries and countless lives, destroyed the economy and you skip away as if nothing happened.
I’m glad things are turning around despite an obstructionist legislture that just recently voted not to increase veterans benefits and medical help. Yeah repubs, support the troops my a**!!!
Sorry rock4tahoe, had to get that off my chest. There’s lots more but that’s all for now. OLS

  15. Dogula says - Posted: March 1, 2014

What lie was that? The fact that a couple thousand Americans were killed by a Muslim attack on the United States?? Completing their only partially successful attack on the World Trade Center from the 90’s? How about the Cole? Was that a lie too?
Let’s see now, let me think about some lies:
If you’re making under $250K you won’t pay one more dime in taxes.
If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.
The attack on Benghazi was because of an anti-Muslim video.
Shovel ready jobs? Cash for Clunkers?
    What’s not to love?

  16. Gordon Ford says - Posted: March 1, 2014

Dog, that’s all you got? The bush administration drove the majority of the voting public away from the party. Start with a mea culpa, it’s the first step. Only then will you be able to critique the current administration. Justin Bieber woulda been better than McCain continuing with the bush agenda. As long as Obama doesn’t destroy the economy and start two wars he is doing better than the republicans did

  17. cosa pescado says - Posted: March 1, 2014

Uh oh, she’s about to go full ‘proud Islamophobe’…

  18. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Democrats Gave us Obama… America’s worst president.

Liberal media lies and an ignorant electorate and this is the result.

Obama will be known as the president that undermined America’s rights and freedoms more than any other president in history.

Further he and the democrats will be known as the party of division for massive failure of Obama Care.

  19. hmmm.... says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Dog, CJ, Bitter….ya’ll really need to up your meds and seek professional counseling.

  20. Old Long Skiis says - Posted: March 2, 2014

hmmm… Not to worry about our friends of a certain “political stripe”. El Dorado animal services has captured two rabid skunks in the Pollok Pines area,(get it, stripes?). Yep, their rounding em’ up. The article also said to avoid contact with bats as they often carry rabies. So from what I’ve read from some of the comments here I would say, stay away from anyone who appears batty or just plain bats— crazy.
It’s out of character for me to compare someone to skunks or bats but when I saw the picture of the skunk and read the article…well, I couldn’t resist. Sorry if I offended anyone, just trying to have a little fun with a few people who comment here. OLS

  21. Dogula says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Gordon, that’s not all I’ve got by a LONG shot.
But why bother? Those who actually need to hear this stuff won’t listen anyway. For some reason, you guys are convinced that the man who is destroying the country loves you and cares about you and will make it all better.
Government doesn’t CARE about you. It isn’t here to take care of you. As much as everybody screams about the little SLT city council, it’s PEANUTS compared to the corruption and incompetence of Washington DC.
But go ahead. Keep blaming George Bush for everything. He’s been gone more than 5 years. Obama owns it now. And the NEXT President will be just as bad. It’s no longer a government of the people by the people. It’s a full-fledged tyranny. And it won’t give up that power voluntarily.

  22. dumbfounded says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Wow, that is a lot of blaming. Non-specific negative generalities can be so informative and helpful. Cogent thought and honesty seems to be gone from public discourse. However, there is plenty of rhetoric and exaggeration. The invective does nothing to make comments credible. Have a wonderful day.

  23. Gordon Ford says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Dog, I am not convinced that the man loves me and cares about me and will make it all better. I am no fan of Obama, I didn’t even vote for him in his second term. My point is that the republicans have some soul searching to do to if they want to win the White House back. Our founding fathers created a balance of power for a reason, we have no tyrant as you suggest. But we do have too much financial influence from corporations, unions, and special interests and that needs to change. If for example the republicans ran on that type of platform, they might win my vote. But the idea that Obama is bad so vote republican is flawed and we just have to look to George bush to prove that. The republicans can do better

  24. hmmm.... says - Posted: March 2, 2014

@old long ski’s…..i read that article and had similar thoughts, but i didn’t want to insult rabid bats and skunks by comparing them to humans-because rabies can’t be cured. Certain people who regularly post DO seem to foam at the mouth often. Maybe a steady diet of Fox ‘News'(snort, snort) fear based hysteria turns the reptilian brain/limbic system into the Limbaugh system. Ski safely.

  25. hmmm.... says - Posted: March 2, 2014

@Dogula…what an interesting post coming from an Ayn Rand acolyte who also calls herself ‘Christian’. Curious as to whether you know what Ayn Rand thought about Christ and Christianity(spoiler alert-it is neither flattering nor pretty). I do not blame President Cheney and his lap dog Dumbya for EVERYTHING-that would be naive. We do not live in a political and economic vacuum, and many of the issues we face ARE directly connected to their intentional and unintentional mismanagement …and I do believe they should be held accountable for their crimes, and for their role in creating the economic and political and foreign policy messes we’re STILL in. If history is back, as someone recently posted, maybe they should read some history from some varying perspectives…and do some fact checking. Obama is not perfect, but he is far better than his predecessors.

  26. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Ok CJ. First, if it hadn’t been for Democratic President Tom Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence (yet owned slaves), their would be no United States of America to begin with.

Second, if it hadn’t been for Democratic President Andy Jackson (the guy on the Twenty Dollar bill), the Native Americans would still be control of most of the Country since Jackson believe that “Indians” were a inferior race.

If it hadn’t been for Democratic President Franklin D Roosevelt (elected FOUR Times), we wouldn’t even be here because the NAZI’s would have taken over the planet and wiped everyone else out.

If it hadn’t been for Democratic President John Kennedy, the Russians would have taken over space (or orbital satellites for ICBMS), Berlin and their would be Nukes on Cuba.

And. If it hadn’t been for President Barack Obama, we would still be fighting in Iraq, Bin Laden would be on the loose and we would be five years into Great Depression II with 24% unemployment etc.

The only person that wants to re-write history on this blog you and our minions. Enough with the kindergarten attitude CJ, it is really childish.

    Which one is it.

Dogula, you saw all this stuff in the final sentences… AND also support the Citizens United decision. That doesn’t make any sense.
Statements like ‘worst president’ and ‘destroyed the country’ are completely hollow hyperbole.
But that’s what we get from the local right wingers. And you think you might be able to recruit anyone. I don’t what CJ/Dog, etc are a part of, but if they are considered representatives then I don’t want anything to do with it.

I wish that someone would try to get a promise from the pundits to never mention the Mr. Obama’s name again as soon as he leaves office. No blaming, nothing can be his fault and no one can talk about what he did during his two terms. After all, he will be gone and whoever is President will “own it”, right?

  29. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Dumbfounded. Some “pundits” don’t want to know any history prior to January 2009.

  30. Parker says - Posted: March 2, 2014

Rock, you really selectively pick History!! I’ve tried sucking it up. But your constant effort to credit any & all things good to Democrats, I just can’t stomach anymore.

Yes, absolutely, I could find fault with many things Republicans have done! But just for simple context, and a dose of reality: The Carter years were terrible for America! During most of the Clinton years, Republicans controlled Congress! Democrats controlled Congress when the financial markets collapsed in ’08, and I never heard any Democrat doing anything to prevent it! And you can make the argument that Obama came into a bad situation, but we’re still in a bad situation 5 plus years later! Only the wealthy cause of the Quantitative Easing program reinflating the bubble, are doing okay. Nice of Obama to look after the wealthy!

I could go on & on. And again, yes could find fault some things Republicans have done! But you seem to want to give the Dems credit for the sun coming up in the morning?!

Russia has nearly a million in their armed forces and we have less them 500k with proposals to cut that number to pre-WWII levels. This isn’t even mentioning the degraded politically correct orders the military is under. This isn’t a dysfunctional Muslim country like Egypt or Libya, this is the real deal and O’Bummer keeps drawing lines in the sand and making hollow speeches and threats aided by lurch Kerry the most clueless person in history and the Russian’s keep laughing and taking a country by force. Obama is not perfect, but studies history enough to avoid catostropgic blunders, the same can not be said for the last republican administration.

Most Americans supported the Iraq war, until its justification was exposed as a lie. That doesn’t make liberals turn coats, it makes bush out to be a liar. The republicans need to repent for George bush. Only then do they stand a chance to earn the trust of the American people.

Now, Lurch Kerry has flown to Ukraine with a loan guarantee of a billion dollars, for who? the military of Ukraine of a few thousand? Kerry is waving at people while Russian troops move and seize at will. There should be a side by side film of Neville Chamberlain as both are about to act the same role. History in this case repeats, Putin states his troops were invited into the country to protect ethnic Russians by the deposed President. This is very similar to Hitler being “invited” into Poland to protect Germans in the Sudetenland as the prelude to WWII broke out. These “annexations” of countries are the start of many troubles and if aggressive force is not met with the same force leaders like Putin become bolder and want more conquest. In this case, the restoration of the former USSR. The world stage has changed and a weak EU and dithering President means Putin acts to do more and China and Russia are increasing their military spending and strength. This is why an inexperienced junior Senator, usually on vacation, is a very poor choice to be leading this country.

Poverty Makers? Who? The Teabag caucus members calling for a repeal of pesky profit inhibiting minimum wage and child labor laws? Taxpayers? Who? Are you a champion of tax reform, suggesting that corporations and the mega rich pay their share? I gotta say, ‘Lurch Kerry’ is funny…though he looks more like a muppet to me. Nowhere near as funny as ‘Darth’ Cheney, though.

Hey Justice. “Lurch Kerry?” Really? He is the guy that got out his boat in Vietnam and went hand to hand. Way more credible then anything you have. Also, Ted “Stranglehold” Nugent admitted in Rolling Stones Mag that he defecated and urinated in his pants for a month before his draft board hearing to get out of going toe Vietnam.

But anyway. Vlad thinks he can just march into Ukraine like Leon did to Afghanistan? Only if the Ukrainians want him too. 140,000 troops plus 1 million reserves, center for missile guidance systems, radar and jamming for Russia, home of some of the hackers that hit Target and others, may have hidden nuclear materials, Chernobyl would be easy to rig up and wait for winds to blow north, they build the Russian T-84 Tank and I am sure Ukrainians know how to build their own IED’s

Vlad is just pissed off Russia was knocked out the Hockey Tournament in Sochi and that his buddy Sarin Assasd had to spill the beans over his nerve gas. He’ll get over it.

Ok Parker. I can’t, as you say, “stomach” you either. So, are we even. Ok, lets find some faults with the GOP together. Let’s start with the Great Depression, Iraq War and Great Recession for reference points.

Thanks rock4-i had forgot about UberPatriot-Nugent being a draft dodger. Funny how some of the loudest warmongers forgot to serve, were too busy at college, or served as so-called ‘national guard pilots’ -yet were/are all too willing to sacrifice OTHER peoples sons and daughters for the profit of the military industrial/corporate complex. I doubt you are going to get a response from Parker…I’m sure he’s halfway to Kiev by now…with his guns and his Sarah Palin lapel pin.

  69. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 4, 2014

Humm. I disagree with Parker on most issues; not all. Personally, I do NOT agree with Jefferson and the 3/5ths compromise or the way Jackson treated Native Americans.

I totally agree with the “chicken-hawk” portrayals. Nugent, Cheney, Limbaugh, Bush Jr (awol), Graham, Santorum, Wolfowitz, McConnell, Bolton etc.

  70. Justice says - Posted: March 4, 2014

Nugent again? John “Lurch” Kerry was exposed as an imposter in Nam long ago and is why he lost in 2004. The real story was he was in Nam to film himself and prepare a political career with fake honors he never had. Many there believe he was “self” wounded in the ass on purpose and people there said he sat on a grenade “accidentally.” He was never in “hand to hand” anything except perhaps pretending to throw his service medals away upon his return to impress Jane Fonda. Remember he then insulted all serving troops as murderers in his infamous Genghis Khan speech in front of Congress. Great guy for high office as a liberal? He, like all Liberals, thinks his speeches and presence alone will cause inaction of powerful foes, how’s it working? and giving speeches while a powerful military action is occurring is a joke. Were the Russian troops waving? They are in full provocation now and not one country will oppose this action with force which gives Russia a free hand. The people of Ukraine will be ignored. Really all liberals can do 99% of the time when not giving speeches is to give away other’s money, that is it. There is nothing else they can think of.

    jane fonda!!!hahaha

  72. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 4, 2014

Justice. John Kerry RECEIVED THREE PURPLE HEARTS, SILVER AND BRONZE STAR. While NUGENT soiled his pants.

Your comments serve no purpose but to lower your own IQ.

“Really all liberals can do 99% of the time when not giving speeches is to give away other’s money, that is it. There is nothing else they can think of.”

Justin, making comments like that will NEVER help in your desire to get involved in any political office. All they will do is make you look like an immature boy.

It looks like 2014 will be an even worse year for human rights than 2013. Why? Because Obama and Sec. of State Clinton have intentionally led us and the world to this miserable declining situation.

Hillary CLinton as the head of the State Department oversaw this decline of American influence and the predicted decline in world order.

At the DNC meeting efforts to find one accomplishment during Clinton’s time at the helm of the State Department. Many Clinton supporters were interviewed and asked what Clinton accomplished while Sec of State.

Not one example was brought out, not one, NONE.

Team Obama fails again and America continues on Obama’s the intentional decline and the lib-bots still live in their world of delusion and lies.

  75. Gordon Ford says - Posted: March 6, 2014

Oh how quick you are to forget. In foreign policy, less is more. Recall all of the giant foreign policy blunders during the bush administration? The same is not true with Obama. There is a comprehensive documentary on this prepared in a manner that you may understand. It’s call “team America, world police.” Do you suggest we should resume the bush doctrine and assert our military around the world? Our servicemen and women would disagree.

  76. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 6, 2014

GF, Obama is president. Has been for five years.

Don’t put words in peoples mouths, that is rude and arrogant.

I assert only what I say period.

Obama / Clinton are responsible for a drastic decline in America and world stability just as predicted.

    Deal with reality.

  77. Biggerpicture says - Posted: March 6, 2014

CJ, the world view of America is FAR better off now than it was during the Bush II presidency.

It’s funny that you finish with, “Deal with reality”, because YOUR reality has absolutely NO correlation to ACTUAL reality!

  78. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 6, 2014

right, sure, drink some more cool-aid …

    One example please… ONE

    I think you are delusional

  79. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 6, 2014

Ok CJ. Secretary of State Clintons achievements: Unlike Powell and Rice, Secretary of State Clinton did not get us into any new Wars. She rebuilt trust with Europe and Asia after the Iraq War debacle destroyed trust with our Allies. She re-opened ties with Burma (Myanmar). Forged tough international sanctions against Iran. Rallied support for the ouster of Gaddafi. She supported the raid to kill Bin Laden, when many were against it. She left office with a 70% approval rating.

  80. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 6, 2014

CJ. I could give you dozens of “examples” of being better off now then under Bush/Cheney, but what is the point since you just ignore the facts. BTW. Asking questions is not “putting words into your mouth.”

  81. cosa pescado says - Posted: March 6, 2014

How can one still support the Iraq war, knowing what we know now?
“right, sure, drink some more cool-aid … ”
Oh right, someone who drank the cool aid to chase down their ‘freedom fries’.

  82. hmmm... says - Posted: March 6, 2014

Love the pictures of McConnell totin’ a rifle up to the podium at CPAC. What a virile, potent manly man…even at his age he can get it up(the rifle, over his head). All he needs to do now is ‘wrestle bears and ride a horse shirtless’. Ain’t that right, CJ?

  83. CJ McCoy says - Posted: March 19, 2014

2013 among the worst years for human rights… and it looks like 2014 will be much worse.

As America Crumbles… so goes the world.

Fish, did I spell everything right?

  84. rock4tahoe says - Posted: March 21, 2014

CJ. 2013 worse for human rights compared with what other years, decades or centuries? The article said “recent memory” not historically, so keep your underwear clean. America crumbles were? Have you been to San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York etc lately and walked around. The newly opened Bay Bridge is a sight. The new Twin Towers and memorial park is a sight. If there is any “crumbling” it is because backward thinking politicians in the rural sticks don’t want any progress made due to their need for more horses and covered wagons.
