39-degree water doesn’t deter Polar Bear swimmers

It turns out that Duct Tape makes a good bathing suit when you’re swimming in 39-degree water.

That was Jeff Hartman’s strategy during the 20th annual Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim in Lake Tahoe on Saturday in Carnelian Bay. While some cold water swimmers might opt for a wet suit, Hartman, of Tahoe City, covered a pair of biking shorts in Duct Tape.

“Duct Tape protects, you know what, from that cold,” said Hartman, 42, who spent more than 15 minutes in the water doing a modified doggie paddle.
